Letter carving

Using a mallet, that had belonged to my grandad, which I inherited a number of years ago I have been doing some letter carving. I had been thinking about ancestral connections, summonsing and ritual. I thought that if I could follow in my grandfathers footsteps or rather his hands by holding the same mallet as him and carving just as he had done I could summon a kind of connection with him. This is a piece that I made for my father for his 60th birthday; it was also shown at Release, a group exhibition I participated in at Wharf Chambers in Leeds, it was displayed alongside a manifesto for my pilgrimage project. For the pilgrimage project I was literally following in my grandads footsteps, walking for two days to the site of a gravestone he carved for his close friend Li Yuan Chia.
