This project was a pilgrimage to the gravestone of Li Yuan Chia; I wanted to create a new memory with my grandad, who died 15 years ago, and to get to know Li who my grandad was so fond of.

During April of this year I spent two days walking along a section of the Hadrian’s Wall path ending at Lanercost Priory to visit the gravestone of Li Yuan Chia which was carved by my grandfather Bryant Fedden.

I walked with my father and along the way we spoke about history, memory, walking and landscape. We talked about our own family and what has been passed on to us. As we walked I spelled out a line from the Selkirk Grace in chalk on the wall, letter by letter, in my grandfather’s own letterform.

“SAE LET THE LORD BE THANKIT”

And thankit I am, truly; for all that I have and all that I’ve had.
